Dermal fillers are injectable gels that restore volume to areas of the face. The products can be placed below the skin’s surface to provide more youthful contours and smoother skin.
-
-
Anti-wrinkle injections can help temporarily smooth the appearance of moderate to severe lines in certain areas of the face such as forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet.
-
-
Dermal fillers are made from a range of different substances, but the primary ingredient in most dermal fillers is a water-loving molecule found naturally in the skin. This molecule is the backbone of many soft, gel-like dermal fillers, which are injected under the skin to give areas such as cheek hollows, lips, and deep facial wrinkles volume.

How long dermal fillers last can depend on the product injected and area of the face treated.

While everyone tolerates pain differently, you may experience some pain and discomfort during and after the procedure. Topical numbing cream can help minimise pain from the needle insertion, along with the anaesthetic lidocaine (lignocaine) that is added to most injectable dermal filler formulations.

While you may experience no side effects at all, as with all medications, side effects can occur. Possible (and common) side effects include injection site redness, pain, firmness, swelling, lumps and bumps, bruising, itching or discolouration. Talk to your medical practitioner for a complete list of side effects or if you have any questions or concerns. It’s also important to tell them about any medications you are taking, such as those that suppress the immune system as these may increase risks of infection and blood thinners which may increase the risk of bleeding.
One of the risks with using these products is unintentional injection into a blood vessel. While rare, the complications may be serious and permanent.

If you are concerned about a loss of facial volume or deepening facial lines, dermal fillers can be a treatment option. As they are administered by injection, the amount of filler used can be adjusted by the injector to the volume required for the area being treated. Consult with a registered medical practitioner/nurse injector to learn how dermal fillers can help restore volume to your facial features.

Once injected into the treatment area, they work to temporarily block the muscle contraction, which causes the muscle activity to decrease and the appearance of wrinkles to reduce.

You may begin to see results in 1–2 days after treatment and it can take from 7–14 days for full results to be seen. The effects of treatments usually last up to 4 months and gradually decrease over time. Regular treatments may help effects last longer.

With anti-wrinkle injections, expect to see initial results 1 to 2 days following treatment, with the full effects visible at between 7 and 14 days.

The syringes used to inject these treatments have small, medical-grade needles. While everyone tolerates pain differently, typically, any pain is minimal and brief and no anaesthetic is required.

For the majority of aesthetic patients, any side effects are temporary and limited to where the anti-wrinkle treatment was injected. Possible side effects include pain, burning or stinging; bruising, swelling or redness at the injection site; local muscle weakness including drooping eyelids or eyebrows; swollen eyelids and skin tightness; tingling sensations, itching or aching forehead; headaches, nausea and flu-like symptoms. If you have any concerns or for a complete list of side effects, talk to your healthcare practitioner.

As you age, you may notice that the expression lines around your forehead and eyes begin to linger a little longer or become a little deeper. If you are 18 years or older and are noticing wrinkles on your face, you may consider consulting a healthcare practitioner. Your healthcare practitioner will be able to determine whether you are suitable for anti-wrinkle injection treatments.
Treatment Areas
If you’re observing that certain areas of your face are suffering from volume loss or moderate to severe lines, you are not alone. The natural ageing process can cause some people to feel that their outward appearance does not reflect the way they feel on the inside, and for this reason they seek solutions in aesthetic medicine. The face can be divided into three main regions, or ‘thirds’, that reflect the main areas of facial ageing:
UPPER FACE
Forehead lines; Glabellar lines; Crow's feet lines; Forehead; Brow; Temples
MIDFACE
Tear trough; Cheeks; Nasolabial folds
LOWER FACE
Lips; Chin; Jawline; Marionette lines; Perioral lines
